Daveyton artist wins art competition

He holds a National Diploma in Fine and Applied Art from the Tshwane University of Technology.

A self-taught artist from Daveyton Tebogo Carllouis Qhingana (29) recently won the Daveyton Mall art competition.

He won an R10 000 cash prize and his chosen artwork Brotherhood has been featured in-centre as a permanent part of the mall’s refurbishment.

According to the Qhingana, he knew about the competition after he was tagged by a few of his friends on Facebook.

“After seeing the post, I was so intrigued. I entered the competition in September after my mother boosted my confidence to say that I had the potential to win and this could open up doors for me.

“Even though I was up against tough competitors, I expected to win the competition.”

Qhingana said his winning artwork represents the different pigmentation of people in the country.

“Due to the high statistics of albinos being trafficked, I saw a need of raising awareness that people who are living with albinism are also human beings and they should be treated as such,” he said.

He said he discovered his love for art when he was in Grade Seven. While other children were eating during break time, he would instead draw.

“I wanted to give up at some point because my parents had a narrative that I must pursue another career but in 2016 when I painted an entrance part of Sesfikile Daveyton Mall, my mother was convinced that I can make my passion into a career. She has since supported me to accomplish my dreams,” Qhingana said.

The artist, who has obtained a National Diploma in Fine and Applied Art from the Tshwane University of Technology, has also participated in various art exhibitions.
