An 11-year-old girl from Barcelona in Etwatwa was recently admitted to the hospital after she was raped by a neighbour.
Following the incident, the suspect was beaten to death by community members.
According to Benoni SAPS spokesperson Nomsa Sekele, the girl was playing in the street on March 20 when the man asked her to go and buy cigarettes for him.
“When she came back, the suspect grabbed her and locked the door while threatening her not to scream. The child was then raped,” said Sekele.
Sekele said the victim was kept all night at the man’s house before she was released on March 21.
When she got home, she reportedly told her parents about the incident and the child was then taken to the hospital.
When she came home from the hospital on March 25, community members took the law into their own hands and assaulted the suspect after he was identified by the child.
A case of rape was opened at the Etwatwa SAPS before it was transferred to the Benoni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
“The case has since been closed as a result of the death of the suspect. Investigations into the death of the suspect is still continuing, and no one has been arrested. The investigating officer is still working on getting the victim counselling,” said Sekele.
