Over 350 road warriors with their four-legged friends took part in a 5km run/walk through the streets of Northmead on Human Rights Day (March 21).

Screams of excitement from participants, as well as barks from dogs, were heard at the finishing line outside Benoni Northerns Sports Club.

The popular race was organised by the Benoni Northerns Athletics Club and The Animal Guardians (TAG) in aid of underprivileged animals.

Race organiser Karren Zotter said all the funds raised from the run will go to TAG to assist with their sterilisation and food drive.

“We have been running this initiative for the fifth year. However, for the past two years, we couldn’t hold any physical events due to lockdown restrictions. Today is our first event post-lockdown, and we are grateful for the good turnout,” she said.

Zotter said they also had sponsors this year, including Ultra Dog, Remax, and Robust a Ball.

“Thank you to everyone who came through to support a great cause. We can’t wait to see you next year,” said Zotter.

Participant Emma Pietroiusti, who came with her three dogs and two children, said she always takes part in the race with her whole family because it is fun.
