Lion’s e-waste collection to stop on April 1

“Collecting someone else's waste has helped us give the precious gift of sight to those in need.”

The Benoni Lakes Lions Club’s e-waste collection point at Lakeside Mall will be moved on April 1.

For the past seven years, the container was used to collect defunct, old or broken electrical appliances, which, through responsible recycling facilitated by Desco Electronic Recyclers, enabled the club to continue contributing to Lions International’s Recycle for Sight and Brightsight campaigns.

“We run the Recycle for Sight campaign, where clubs are encouraged to collect spectacles for recycling. However, in South Africa, only the frames can be recycled,” said Beaulieu Maré, Lions Lakes Club president.

“To put a new spin on the project, we opted to encourage the safe disposal of e-waste items that are not accepted at landfill sites.

“There was such an overwhelming response to early collections, so the project grew.”

She said the decision was made to remove the container from the centre, as it has generated enough e-waste, and it is felt that the container can be put to better use somewhere else.

We are grateful that the centre hosted our project for so long and would like to thank the community for their support,” said Maré.

“We will soon host collection drives at various locations to educate the public about recycling e-waste and facilitate the process responsibly.”
