My Vision Your Vision celebrates Human Rights Day with empowerment session

The programme’s goal was to empower, mould and motivate young women from various backgrounds.

Benoni-based organisation My Vision Your Vision commemorated Human Rights Day on March 21 by educating young women that they have rights and can rise above their current circumstances.

Held at the Benoni Lifeline Centre, the aim of the event was to empower, mould and motivate young women from various backgrounds from Etwatwa and Daveyton.

The founder of the organisation, Tebogo Gwebu, said they saw the need to celebrate Human Rights Day by highlighting the importance of the day to young people.

“Having rights comes with responsibilities, so we wanted to share with these young women that they need to make constructive decisions while growing up. We also shared about issues they might face as women and how they can deal with them, such as teenage pregnancy, gender-based violence and gender issues in the workplace,” said Gwebu.

Kgothatso Koopedi of the Ekurhuleni mayor’s office told attendees they were models and could change their current reality because their backgrounds do not define them.

“We hope to host more of these talks with different young women in the future,” said Koopedi.

A nurse from Leratong Clinic, Esther Mofokeng, reminded women they could achieve their goals and whatever they set their minds to.

“I had a baby at a young age because of peer pressure. I hope these girls thrive and become independent women we can be proud of. They are fortunate to have such programmes as they will help them better understand life. While I was growing up, such programmes did not exist,” Mofokeng said.

One of the girls who attended the programme, Sweetness Mathebula, said: “I am very happy that I attended today’s session. I’ve learned so much. I’m now better informed and will pass on the information to other women as well.”
