Police nab 12 undocumented persons

The suspects pretended to be legitimate contractors.

Members of the Benoni Police Station arrested 12 undocumented foreigners in two separate incidents on March 16.

According to Capt Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the police station, they were called to assist the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSiRA) with a case in Rynfield.

“Upon arrival, we found six men and a woman had been employed as uniformed security personnel,” she said.

“They were arrested on charges of being in the country illegally. Further charges will be brought against them and their employer in terms of the PSiRA Act 56 of 2001.”

In Thirteenth Avenue, Northmead, police arrested a further five people on charges of theft, damage to infrastructure and being in the country illegally.

“The men had erected orange mesh on the sidewalk to hide the fact that they were digging up Telkom lines,” said Sekele.

“They were found in possession of six 13m lengths of cable.”

Investigations are continuing in both cases.
