Build a bug hotel

The insect hotel initiative was launched in 2019 and saw creative and eco-friendly homes being displayed.

Critters deserve a good home too, and the Korsman Conservancy is inviting local schools and community groups to help with expanding the development.

The insect hotel initiative was launched in 2019 and saw creative and eco-friendly homes being displayed within the conservancy opposite the Audrey Ritz Park, The Drive.

“Insects play a critical role within the eco-system,” said Jane Trembath, chairperson of the volunteer group.

“By building and displaying these hotels, we as humans can get a rare insight into a bug’s life.”

Installation of this year’s builds is scheduled to take place in October and must be done by the builders.

Tips for building a bug home:
• Use natural materials as far as possible as insects are not attracted to artificial materials.
• Research your materials to ensure it is insect-friendly. Some items like pine cones are not generally used for nesting.
• Build a single large hotel or attach multiple smaller hotels but ensure it is sturdy.
• Close the open sections with mesh to prevent nesting and food reserves from falling out.
• All the elements must be elevated to prevent decomposition.
• Remember, it will be exposed to weather and no maintenance will be done on the installations.
