Cyclists seek justice

An increasing trend of lawlessness amongst road users threatens the safety of cyclists.

Cyclists are invited to actively take part in the national Pedal Power Association’s (PPA) safe cycling initiative, #CyclistsLivesMatter, on March 5 from 09.00 at the Valverde Eco Hotel in the Cradle of Humankind.

PPA has supported cyclists for over 40 years and as one of the country’s largest cycling organisations, they uphold the rights of cyclists and a vision for a Cycling South Africa.

On the day, the organisation, along with other cycling clubs across the province will pay their respects to the family of the late André Piehl.

Cyclists are invited to take a selfie in front of a #CyclistsLivesMatter media wall and to post it, using the hashtag on all social media platforms.

“We are inviting all cyclists to participate and show their support for the campaign,” said Steve Hayward, chairperson of PPA.

“We have noticed a growing intolerance between motorists and cyclists coupled with an increasing trend of lawlessness among road users, which threatens the safety of cyclists across the country.

“Cyclists are taxpayers, contributing members of society and family members, therefore, each serious injury or death is an unnecessary one which could have been avoided.”

PPA seeks the successful prosecution of drivers responsible for fatal and serious accidents.

“We also call on all cyclists to continue to respect the law and abide by the relevant legislation,” he said.
