Serial rapist bail application denied at Daveyton Magistrate’s Court

The state told the court that it was not in the best interest of justice to release the accused.

The bail application of the alleged Ekurhuleni serial rapist was denied in the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court yesterday (February 28) and the case was postponed to today (March 1) for the announcement of the start of the high court sitting.

The State opposed bail for the 36-year-old on the basis he may pose a threat to society if released.

Using crutches to support himself, the accused appeared in the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court on February 25 and 28 for a formal bail application hearing.

He faces 203 charges of rape, kidnapping and theft committed in and around Ekurhuleni from 2012 to March 2021.

Prosecutor Refiloe Neluonde told the court that it was not in the best interest of justice to release the accused on bail because the State has a strong case against him.

The State, among other things, said there was a likelihood the accused would evade trial, as he had evaded police before and could flee because he was unemployed.

The State said the accused posed a risk to his victims who walked to school, malls and church daily.

The lawyer for the accused argued his client should be granted bail due to the poor medical treatment he has been receiving in the Modderbee Prison hospital.

He stated one of his client’s kidneys was removed as a result of the injuries he sustained when police shot him the day of his arrest, which has left him limping and reliant on crutches.

The State rebutted by saying the accused is receiving all the necessary medical attention he needs and that there is no evidence to the contrary.

According to Neluonde, the serial rapist’s victims were between 10 and 44 years old. The suspect has been linked to cases through DNA and modus operandi.

It was also stated the suspect, who lives with his mother and has three children, didn’t want his family to know about his arrest in March last year.

The court also heard the suspect used a knife, firearm and his bare hands to subdue his victims when he cornered them.

He would allege he installs meter boxes, geysers, is a house inspector, a food distributor or looking for directions when approaching his victims.

It came to light in court he would allegedly rob and rape his victims while threatening to kill them if they reported the matter to police.
