WATCH: Operation Okae Molao clamps down on crime in Daveyton

The operation saw more people arrested for various crimes.

About 238 arrests were made during the Operation Okae Molao in Daveyton on February 16 and 17.

The operation was aimed at reducing the levels of crime in the province for the safety of Gauteng residents.

According to Ekurhuleni District SAPS communications officer Capt Neldah Sekgobela, 116 people were arrested for cases ranging from assault, armed robbery, business robbery, kidnapping, murder and malicious damage to properties.

“About 26 more people were arrested for house break-in, theft of motor vehicle and business burglary. More people were also arrested for serious crimes, such as fraud, discharge of firearm, reckless driving, contravention of protection order, contempt of court, intimidation, pointing of firearm and for gender-based violence-related issues,” she said.

The police were hard at work on February 17 during Operation Okae Molao in Daveyton.

On February 17, district commissioner Maj-Gen Anna Sithole and Benoni SAPS station commander Brig Thabo Mphuthi, as well as other senior officers from the Ekurhuleni district, took to the streets of Daveyton to stop and search motorists along Eiselen Street. Police focused on all major entrances and exits. Members of the EMPD and Road Traffic Officers were part of the operation.

According to Sithole, 43 traffic fines to the value of R14 100 were issued to those who contravened the Road Traffic Act, while two vehicles were impounded.

“One of the vehicles had a Rietgat case of November 15, 2018. About seven people were also arrested for dealing and possession of drugs, while eight illegal shebeens were closed down,” said Sithole.

Sithole added during the operation, illegal immigrants were arrested and four illegal mining pendukas and steel balls were seized.

The operation also saw members of Social Crime Prevention conducting school searches at two high schools in Daveyton to ensure the safety of learners and teachers.

Sekgobela said during the search at the schools, 11 sharp scissors, a suspected powder believed to be a drug and dagga and a box of matches were seized.

Sithole applauded members for contributions to fight crime in communities.
