Chase leads to arrest of suspected armed robbers

Police pursued the suspects on foot.

Members of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) with the help of the EMPD and other security personnel arrested three suspected armed robbers on the N12 highway at the Amina Cachalia Street (Tom Jones Street) off-ramp, on February 18.

According to WO Grant Giblin, spokesperson for BFS, members received information to be on the lookout for a blue Toyota Corolla that was used during an armed robbery in Putfontein.

“The vehicle was spotted on the N12 highway heading towards Benoni when a chase ensued,” he said.

“The driver of the vehicle lost control and crashed after taking the exit. Five suspects fled from the scene towards nearby bushes.”

Members of BFS managed to track the driver and recovered a 9mm pistol with 11 rounds, which he had discarded during the chase.

“EMPD officers apprehended a further two suspects and recovered another 9mm pistol,” he said.
Investigations into the case is continuing.
