Work underway to fix Putfontein sewer pump station

Ekurhuleni metro said the blockage is caused by dumped materials that are not supposed to be dumped in the system.

According to the Ekurhuleni metro, repairs and installation of the broken pumps at the Putfontein sewer pump station are underway, however, a lot of awareness is needed on sewerage abuse.

This follows complaints from concerned business owners in Putfontein about a massive sewage spillage caused by the municipality’s faulty pump station.

The City Times recently visited the site and discovered the area filled with overflowing wastewater, while tampons, sanitary pads, faeces, diapers, toilet paper, condoms and many other waste products were lying around the yard.

Metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said the operation of this sewer pump station has been “on and off” due to frequent blockages that are caused by sewerage abuse.

“The public dumps materials that are not supposed to be dumped in the system and this causes continuous blockages that are detrimental to the mechanical and electrical equipment,”

Dlamini added the appointed service provider is busy with pump repairs and once the repaired pump is reinstalled the spillage will stop.
