Police warn residents to stay alert during census

Census workers do not have to enter your home

With Census 2022 in full swing, police are cautioning residents to remain vigilant while fieldworkers walk the streets to collect vital population data.

According to Capt Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the Benoni SAPS, members of the police will be conducting increased visible policing operations until end of February, when the process is completed.

“We urge members of the community to participate in the national census process but to remain cautious,” she said.

“Do not let anyone into your home, fieldworkers are not required to enter your home and will be happy to conduct their structured survey from outside your door or gate.

“Share information regarding the process with all household employees, such as domestic workers, childminders as well as gardeners, and ensure they do not allow anyone access to your home or property.”

She continued by saying that fieldworkers need to ensure they too are safe while conducting their work.

“Criminals are opportunistic and might lure workers into their homes with the promise of food, something cold to drink or even a well-deserved break,” she said.

“This again puts the workers, especially women, at risk of falling victim to sexual assault.”

Residents are once again urged to report any suspicious persons or behaviour on the My SAPS app or by phoning the 10111 emergency number.
