Paramedic stabbed at Northmead office

The paramedic escaped without serious injuries following the attack.

ER24 has strongly condemned violence against its emergency workers after a paramedic was treated and hospitalised on February 2 following an armed robbery at their Northmead branch at around 11:30.

According to ER24 communications officer Russel Meiring, the paramedic was in his office when he noticed a man outside the premises.

“The paramedic offered assistance. Following a brief conversation, the man asked for small change. He indicated that cash was not kept on the premises whereby the man presented a knife and demanded the paramedic hand over his cellphone.

“The paramedic refused and the man attacked him,” said Meiring.

A struggle ensued as the paramedic fought for his life.

“In the struggle, the paramedic managed to kick his attacker and the man fled the scene. The paramedic sustained a stab wound above his eye and to his arm.

“He was then assessed and transported to the hospital for treatment. Fortunately, this staff member escaped without serious injuries and received stitches to the wound above his eye and his arm.
“He was later discharged to continue his recovery at home,” said Meiring.

A case of attempted robbery and assault will be opened at the Benoni SAPS. Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect is urged to contact the police.
