WATCH: Putfontein sewerage spillage a headache for businesses

Ward 24 Clr Nicola da Silva has escalated the complaint to the relevant department.

A massive sewerage spillage at a sewer pump station in Putfontein has caused concern for local business owners.

A local businessman who preferred to remain anonymous said the unbearable stench has become part of their reality.

The business owner told the City Times that the faulty pump station has caused the sewage to overflow inside the site’s yard and into a nearby dam.

“The raw sewage continues to flow unabated into a nearby dam, causing harm to nature and to people’s lives who live around the informal settlement close to the pump station,” said anonymous.

The City Times recently visited the site and discovered that the place is filled with overflowing wastewater, while tampons, sanitary pads, faeces, diapers, toilet paper, condoms and many other waste products were lying around the yard.

Speaking to a security guard at the site, he shared that the situation has been like that for a year.

“Maintenance and operation technicians usually come but it seems that they can’t figure out what the problem is because the place is always flooded with raw sewage. It is depressing to witness the sewage spillage every day,” the guard said.

Ward 24 Clr Nicola da Silva said she had escalated the complaint to the relevant department while the City Times is still waiting for a comment from the Ekurhuleni municipality.
