Benoni SPCA receives few animals after New Year’s fireworks

If your pet is missing visit the SPCA at 3 Klein Street, Lakefield.

Compared to other years, fewer stray animals were received at the Benoni SPCA on December 31 (New Year’s Eve).

Benoni SPCA manager Bronwyn Kleynhans said this was due to the fewer fireworks that were set off.

“We did not receive any reports of animals injured by fireworks. However, we did get calls of dogs injured by vehicles more than in previous years. We believe this was due to the animals being spooked by the fireworks which made them run around in the streets.”

Kleynhans urged members of the public whose dogs are missing to visit the society at 3 Klein Street, Lakefield, to check if their dog was brought in.

“We also urge all pet owners to get their pet microchipped. This way, if the pet does run out of the property, we can scan them and contact the owner,” said Kleynhans.
