Families speak out about shooting tragedy

One of the boys had his deceased grandfather's firearm without his parents' knowledge.

The families of the two deceased learners from Lesiba Secondary School have set the record straight in regard to the circumstances that led to the death of the two boys.

Zukiso Majola (16) committed suicide after shooting and killing a fellow learner, Njabulo Ndhlebe (16), on the first day of school (January 12) outside the school premises during school hours.

A statement released by both families suggests that there was no quarrelling among the two learners on the day of the incident as reported by the Department of Education.

According to the families, the 16-year-old boys were best friends for a few years.

A representative of the two families, Sibusiso Nkabinde, said Zukiso and Njabulo, and another friend snuck out of school during break to hang out at Zukiso’s home.

“When they got home Zukiso showed his friends his deceased grandfather’s gun, which he had taken from his grandfather’s home during the December holidays without his parents’ knowledge,” said Nkabinde.

Zukiso Majola (16) committed suicide after shooting and killing his friend.

To impress his friends, Zukiso allegedly loaded the gun and played with it.

“While playing with the pistol, the gun accidentally went off shooting Ndhlebe behind the ear.

“In shock and panic, the other friend ran to his house, near Zukiso’s home, and Zukiso ran after him asking him to help.

“Community members came out to confront the boys about the matter after hearing a gunshot and seeing them running away,” he said.

Nkabinde added that in fear and panic, Zukiso ran back home and closed the garage door and used the same gun to shoot himself in the head.

“It is reported that Zukiso, who was fond of his grandfather, took his grandfather’s firearm in remembrance of him.”

Speaking to City Times, Nkabinde said Ndhlebe’s mother is gaining strength from the love and support that she’s received from the public.

“Both families of the deceased are deeply saddened and in pain by the loss of the boys.

“The families have held numerous meetings and prayer sessions together,” said Nkabinde.

A memorial service of the two boys will be held at Lesiba Secondary School on January 18 at 09:00.
