Daveyton learner (16) fatally shoots fellow learner then himself

The Crystal Park police are investigating the incident.

A 16-year-old learner from Lesiba Secondary School committed suicide after shooting and killing a fellow learner on the first day of school on January 12.

According to Gauteng education spokesperson Steve Mabona, the incident did not take place on the school premises.

“It is alleged that the two learners had a quarrel during school hours, which led to one of the learners shooting another learner in the head and then shooting himself,” said Mabona.

Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said, “It is tragic to lose learners at the hands of violence as the academic year begins. We wish to send our sincere condolences to the families of these learners. We also urge our learners to always refrain from any form of violent behaviour.”

The department has dispatched psycho-social officials to counsel members of the school community who were affected by this incident.

The Crystal Park police are investigating the incident.
