It has been a sombre time for Actonville with the demise of Ahmed Salem, an ever-smiling cashier at Al-Saudi Bakery, who hails from Egypt.

Despite its relatively young age, the bakery has become a prominent feature of Actonville’s business hub and has proven popular with clients from near and far.

It has also made a commendable mark on community feeding and upliftment initiatives and despite its popularity – a shop that is almost bursting at its seams with customers – its owners have always maintained a beautiful human touch. This is an approach that was epitomised by its always upbeat cashiers, Ahmed being one of them.

Despite the weaving queues at the bakery, no customer would ever be treated as just a number.

Each person would be acknowledged, greeted, and a light banter would follow.

Ahmed had a soft spot for children and would unfailingly gift children of clients a sweet every time. Truly admirable qualities given the pressures associated with such a buzzing enterprise.

He lost his life protecting others and earning his livelihood and fell victim to a cold-blooded crime.

May the Almighty afford him a peaceful rest, and console the hearts of his family and all those shattered by this loss.

Editor’s note:
As reported online recently, the Actonville Police are calling on anyone with information to come forward after a 28-year-old man (Salem) was shot during a robbery at a local bakery on December 4.

Actonville SAPS spokesperson Sgt Godin Nyathi said the Egyptian national was shot and wounded on the upper and lower body during a scuffle with the robbers who were robbing the bakery owner.

“The robbers managed to flee the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash,” said Nyathi.

“The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died on December 5.”

No arrests have been made. Police are investigating.

A case of murder and robbery was opened at the Actonville SAPS.

Anyone who may have information that could assist with the investigation is urged to contact the station on 011 964 6000 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MYSAPS app.
