Flying squad takes illegal gun, ammo off the streets

A suspect was arrested after he was found in possession of 50 live rounds of ammunition.

From December 17 to 19, Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) officers arrested four suspects and recovered a firearm, ammunition and a motorcycle, reported BFS communications officer WO Grant Giblin.

“On December 18, officers followed up information at a residence in Pondfish Street, Kaalfontein, where a suspect was arrested after he was found in possession of 50 live rounds of ammunition.

“Continuing to follow up on the information received, at around 22:30 they proceeded to a residence in Platy Street, Kaalfontein, in search of an unlicenced firearm.

“Upon arrival, a suspect came out the premises and fired a number of shots at the officers, who returned fire,” said Giblin.

The suspect escaped into a veld. Nobody was injured during the shoot-out.

Upon searching the premises, officers recovered another 50 live rounds of ammunition, police clothing apparel and 11 black plastic bags containing dagga.

The search continues for the suspect.

“On December 19, at around 12:30, officers received information about an unlicenced firearm at an address in Combiza Street, Daveyton.

“Upon following up on this information, they arrested a suspect after he was found in possession of a Taurus .38 revolver and six live rounds of ammunition.

“The suspect did not have a licence for the firearm,” Giblin said.

In further policing, officers were patrolling in Freedom Street, Rabie Ridge, when they were stopped by members of the public who pointed out a suspect wanted for assault.

The suspect was arrested and found to be in possession of a knife

Information from a tracking company led officers to a premises in Ivory Park Extension Nine, where they arrested a suspect for possession of a white Big Boy motorcycle.

Investigation continues in all cases.

The suspects will appear in local magistrate’s courts to face charges of possession of unlicenced firearm and ammunition, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and possession of a stolen motorcycle.
