The Interact Club of St Francis College, a club the Rotary Club of Benoni Aurora sponsors, spent the morning of December 3 making a difference in the lives of the residents in the Barcelona township.
Learners handed out 250 packets of supplies and piles of clothes to the children and adults.
Club mentor Rotarian Yolande Moseley said she was overwhelmed by all the hard work the learners put into helping others over the past two years, particularly when things have been so hard for so many.
“These young people are passionate and caring and an inspiration to work with,” said Moseley.
The club members meet regularly after school or communicate via their social media groups to develop fund-raising ideas and select projects that they can support.
They spent the last three months collecting toiletries, canned food and clothes to hand out to the residents.
The president of the Interact Club, Dimpho Maila, said they selected Barcelona Friends of Martin de Porres NPO as a distribution point because it is a centre focused on the local community where many people live. She said it is also accessible to many people who come through weekly to the soup kitchen.
Maila added that this is not the first time the St Francis Interact Club has done this project and it will not be the last.
“We will continue to collect items so that we can help improve the situation for those people in the township and informal settlements,” she said.
Interact clubs are Rotary clubs for high school learners. These clubs are supported by their sponsoring Rotary club in their projects.
Not all schools have Interact clubs, but if any high schools are interested in forming a club, they can contact their local Rotary club to learn more.
Rotary also has a few clubs in primary schools called Early Act clubs, where young learners are also involved in local community projects.
