Benoni Lakes Lions assist Robmen House

The house is part of Manger Care Centre in Brentwood Park and currently shelters 15 people who are elderly and/or disabled.

Helping those in need is what members of the Benoni Lakes Lions Club aim to do and have successfully done so again at the Robmen House in Northmead.

The house is part of Manger Care Centre in Brentwood Park and currently shelters 15 people who are elderly and/or disabled.

The idea to revamp the bathroom was initiated by Lions member Nick Maré, who saw the need to fix the bathtub, place a shower and reposition the toilet.

Maré said the revamp took about three weeks and cost about R50 000.

“We have been assisting the home for years,” said the club’s president, Beaulieu Maré.

Present on the day were some members of the Lions, Tops and Tags coordinator Lynne Crawcour, Robmen House residents and the Atlasville Organisation representative, Pierre Marneweck.

“Robmen House and the Atlasville Organisation have been assisting us by collecting bottle tops and bread tags,” Beaulieu explained.

The bottle tops and tags were donated to Lynne who will have them exchanged for wheelchairs.
“We also managed to collect a wheelchair, which we are donating to Tops and Tags as well,” Beaulieu explained.

Lynne was grateful for the donations and added that she already has someone in mind for the wheelchair.

“So far, we have done about 79 wheelchairs, 80 with this donation,” Lynn explained.

“The woman I have in mind for this wheelchair is elderly; she fell and is fragile at the moment, which means she needs the wheelchair.”

Housefather/ leader Lawrens de Wit said the new bathroom is a dream come true.
“It is like we are in heaven, nothing else can compare,” he said.
“The bathroom is wonderful for the people who live here.”

Not only did the home receive an improved bathroom, but the club also embroidered the initials of each resident on their towel.

Ward 27 Clr Lornette Joseph also attended because she enjoyed watching the community work together to help others.

“We would like to thank the Benoni community who has been amazing in helping us to collect bottle tops and bread tags. We will be continuing with the donations,” Beaulieu concluded.
