Police warn of hijackings, murder in Chief Albert Luthuli

The Crystal Park SAPS has experienced an increase in cases of hijackings and murder in Chief Albert Luthuli informal settlement in the past few weeks.

Crystal Park SAPS spokesperson Sgt Lerato Mopeli said most of the incidents occur at night when people are sitting in their vehicles with friends or partners and the murders are related to illegal mining in the area.

“Motorists sitting in a parked vehicle at night attract criminals, so we urge the community to avoid doing that,” said Mopeli.

On November 9, the police together with sector commanders, patrollers and community support program members’ conducted a door-to-door campaign to create awareness with the residents of Chief Albert Luthuli Extension Five and Six.

“We handed out pamphlets and we shared safety tips with the community to prevent them from becoming victims. We are heading to the festive season and criminals will commit a crime when the opportunity arises.”

Mopeli said police will continue patrolling and will conduct illegal mining operations to curb this trend. They encourage residents to come forward if they have any information on the culprits.

Tips to avoid becoming a victim:

• Be on the lookout for suspicious people.

• Be familiar with your environment.

• Lock your car doors.

• Park inside the yard or garage.

• Avoid sitting in or using your cellphone in your car at night.
