Truck set on fire on N12

Sekele added that the case is under investigation and they cannot comment at this moment on whether other reported truck fires are related to the incident.

The Benoni SAPS is investigating a case of malicious damage to property after a truck was engulfed in flames on the N12 east after Kingsway between 20:00 and 21:00 on October 26.

Capt Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson of the Benoni SAPS, said according to the driver he had left the border from Zimbabwe to deliver sugar when he was notified that trucks are being burnt on the N12. Just as he had attempted to find another route a bakkie stopped in front of the truck.

“Puzzled by the incident, the driver stopped and saw someone open his door. Upon closer inspection, he saw that the man had a two-litre container that was presumed to have petrol inside,” Sekele explained.

“A firearm was pointed at him and he was dragged out of the truck moments before they set the truck alight. The men took the driver’s cellphone and fled the scene.”

No arrests have yet been. Sekele added the case is under investigation and they cannot comment at this moment on whether other reported truck fires are related to the incident.
