Businesses to host a fund-raiser for Farrarmere cancer patient

Show your support by getting a ribbon tattoo for R200 at the Lifestyle Terrace on October 30 from 8:00 to 16:00.

Making a permanent commitment to raise awareness of cancer while lessening the burden of medical costs for Sue Sanderson, who is fighting stage four cancer, is the goal of the two-day fund-raising event that will take place in Benoni and Boksburg on October 30 and 31.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so Copper Royale tattoo studio, East Side Barbers and Ghost Ops will be using this opportunity to raise awareness and support the Farrarmere resident by encouraging the public to get inked for only R200 at the Lifestyle Terrace on October 30 from 08:00 to 16:00.

The R200 special only applies to a tattoo of a cancer ribbon.

Another way to support the cause for Sue is to lay your cards on the table at the Cardinals Baseball Club in Boksburg from 16:00 on a poker evening, on October 31.

The event requires pre-booking with a R400 buy-in that needs to be paid. For more information and where to pay, contact Graham Clark on 082 859 4081.

Funds raised will be donated to Sue, whose medical aid oncology benefit has reached its limit for the year.

Sue was diagnosed in 2018 with stage three breast cancer.

“I underwent treatment (chemo, double mastectomy and radiation) and in July 2019, I found out it had spread to my bones.

Now that I was at stage four, I was going to be on treatment permanently,” she explained.

The cancer had been spreading and at the beginning of this year, she was told it had spread to her liver and just over a month ago to her lungs also.

With her oncology benefit reaching its limit, Sue is expected to pay for her treatment until March and each chemo treatment costs around R6 000.

The fund-raiser was organised by her husband’s friends after he had decided to sell his motorcycle to pay for her chemo treatment.

“We are truly grateful to all our friends and family for the support, as we believe we’ll have enough after the fund-raiser to keep us going until March and we don’t want more than what we need.”
