Man assaults girlfriend, sets shack alight in Putfontein

A case of arson and assault GBH was opened at the Putfontein SAPS.

The Putfontein police are investigating a case of arson and assault GBH after a man hit his girlfriend and her daughter with a hammer before setting their shack alight on October 18.

The incident occurred in Zwakala informal settlement in Putfontein around 22:00.

Putfontein SAPS spokesperson Sgt Raider Ubisi said according to the girlfriend, there was an argument between her and the boyfriend as he was accusing her of cheating.

“The man assaulted her and her daughter with a hammer. The woman ran to the neighbours for help, the boyfriend followed her and forced her to return to the shack,” said Ubisi.

“The woman refused to go back and sought refuge at the neighbours’. Around 02:00 the neighbours alerted the woman that her shack was on fire.”

Ubisi said the community tried to put out the fire, but it was too late and everything was destroyed.

The woman and her daughter sustained minor injuries. A case of arson and assault GBH was opened at the Putfontein SAPS.

The man believed to be in his 40s fled the scene. No arrests have been made.
