Factory fire contained in Apex

The case of the fire is unknown.

Three explosions at a factory in Apex allegedly started the blaze at Shield Chemicals on October 21 at around 08:45.

The business, situated in London Street, manufactures car-care products.

Ekurhuleni DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi said they were alerted to the fire at around 09:45.

“A firefighter who was conducting an inspection in the area saw the smoke and went into the factory to see what was happening.

“He then called for backup while he tried to assist,” said Ntladi.

“The fire engines rushed to the scene. We are here with a fleet of seven fire engines and about 25 firefighters.

“What burnt inside the building are chemicals such as benzine, alcohol-based materials and other products, such as car polish and aerosols.”

Ntladi said while the Tsakani fire engine was en route to the scene, it was involved in an accident near Carnival Mall, but the team did arrive on scene.

An employee of a company next door said when they saw the fire, they quickly grabbed fire extinguishers to try and contain the blaze from spreading to their premises; however, one of their trucks were slightly damaged.

The fire was contained by 12:00 when the City Times was on scene.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is unknown and further investigations will be conducted.
