Ekurhuleni hits the million Covid-19 vaccination mark

Stats revealed that in the City, new Covid-19 infection cases had for the past few weeks been ranging between single-digit and two-digit numbers.

The City of Ekurhuleni has recently managed to reach a milestone of administering just over a quarter of the City’s almost four million residents against Covid-19.

According to metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, of the almost four million Ekurhuleni’s population, the City had by October 3 vaccinated over a million people.

This milestone was achieved during the Vooma Vaccination Weekend drive launched by President Cyril Ramaphosa on October 1 at DH Williams Hall in Katlehong.

The Vooma Vaccination Weekend drive is a government programme aimed at accelerating the speed at which vaccines are administered to as many people in South Africa as possible before the start of the anticipated fourth wave of Covid-19.

“In only three days after the launch of the campaign, our health team administered 20 754 vaccines, bringing the total number of vaccines administered to 1 013 714 as of October 5.

“We are happy to see that residents heeded the president’s call to get vaccinated during the weekend drive.

While the million mark is a great achievement, efforts are still in place to get more people vaccinated to achieve herd immunity,” said MMC for Health and Social Services Nomadlozi Nkosi.

The MMC further reminded residents to get their second dose to be fully vaccinated.

“Residents need not return to the same vaccination site but can visit a site convenient to them as they are already on the database,” she said.

Signs of hope as Ekurhuleni sees a downward trend in new Covid-19 casesThe daily new Covid-19 case numbers in Ekurhuleni continue to decrease, according to statistics released by the government.

Stats revealed that in the City, new Covid-19 infection cases had for the past few weeks been ranging between single-digit and two-digit numbers.

In one of the recent statistics for the past 24 hours, the City only recorded 10 new Covid-19 infection cases.

Even with the decrease in the number of new cases, the metro emphasised the virus remains a threat, especially due to the large number of people who have not been vaccinated, and thus urged residents to continue adhering to the country’s Covid-19 safety measures, such as wearing a mask, maintaining a social distance and avoiding large gatherings.

“The unvaccinated residents are also urged to heed the call to get their vaccines and be protected against Covid-19 and hospitalisation,” said Dlamini.

National Institute for Communicable Diseases statistics indicated that daily new Covid-19 case numbers countrywide are showing positive signs in the battle against the pandemic.
