Support fundraiser for little leukaemia warrior

Attendees can look forward to a fun-filled day with live performances, food stalls, craft stalls, children's entertainment, and a trophy will be presented to the biggest club.

The Sons of Old School MC and ARC Warriors Joburg are inviting the public to join them in celebrating a leukaemia warrior, Deon Olivier, on October 2.

The fundraiser named Deon’s Day will be held at the ARC Warriors clubhouse at 108 Protea Street (corner of Springs Road), Putfontein, from 11:00.

Attendees can look forward to a fun-filled day with live performances, food stalls, craft stalls, children’s entertainment, and a trophy will be presented to the biggest club. A donation is required at the entrance.

The seven-year-old was diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukaemia on June 8.

His father, Vincent, said Deon’s condition and the timing of it during Covid-19 have pulled friends and family together.

“We have met loads of wonderful people we might not have otherwise met. We are sharing with other families that have or are going through similar situations,” said Vincent.

“Through this event, Deon needs to know how immense his efforts have been on fighting this disease and we think seeing all the people that have come to support him in his fight will give him the needed spirit to get to the finish line. This will also allow him to do something special for other children who are facing staggering odds when we donate after he is well and done celebrating.”

The little warrior is on a German treatment regime to treat his leukaemia.

Vincent explains that this includes multiple lumbar punchers, various toxic compounds, chemo in liquid form and tablet forms. He also needs to disinfect his mouth three times a day after meals.

“We are still very fortunate with regards to medical bills. We have only had a few tests and medications that required additional payment. We are currently on medical aid and have received approval for the oncology benefit that should cover Deon’s treatments up to R200 000. After this, we would be liable for 20% off all his medical bills,” he said.

“He is currently on the third stage of his treatment, which means that he only has to attend treatment at the hospital twice a month. Stage one and two were more intense as he had to go to hospital four or five days a week for treatment, for 60 minutes to the whole day.”

The father said the funds raised from the event will be used to pay his medical bills should there be a need.

“Once Deon is safe and the doctor gives us the go-ahead, we are planning on taking him away for a bit to celebrate his victory.

“He has wanted to go to the coast for the past two years. We had a trip planned just before he fell ill. We would also like to donate the remaining funds to someone in need if there is anything left after the break.

“The charity or person will be discussed with the team from Sons of Old School MC and other key role players,” said Vincent.

The Kempton Park resident is currently enrolled at Van Riebeeck Park Laerskool in Kempton Park.

“Deon is currently trying to complete his Grade Two at home. His grandmother, Nana Carol, is helping him during the day and then he goes home at 13:00 to either his mother, Chantel, or my house.

“The school and his teachers have been very supportive, sending his work home to be done. We are trying very hard to avoid Deon having to repeat Grade Two next year.”

Vincent said they are looking forward to the event to help get Deon’s spirits up. The treatment and constant sickness have changed his spirit.

Deon is a very proud Cub Scout; he also loves animals and everything to do with animals.

“He loves being outdoors, but he could also spend a day inside and just play TV games with me and his sisters, Miche (12) and Hayleigh (13).”
