Rabies jab half price at SPCA on September 28

The Benoni SPCA encourages pet parents to get their animals vaccinated for half the price on the day.

World Rabies Day is an international awareness campaign for rabies control that will be celebrated on September 28.

The Benoni SPCA encourages pet parents to get their animals vaccinated for half the price on the day.

Rabies vaccinations are available during offices hours at the organisation from Monday – Friday (08:30 – 15:45) and Saturdays (08:30 – 11:45). They usually cost R50 per animal, walk-ins are accepted.

What is rabies?

Rabies is a virus and a zoonotic disease (a disease that people can get from an animal). The virus is shed in the saliva of infected animals. People and other animals are usually infected when bitten by a rabid animal.

What are the symptoms of a rabid animal?

• Unprovoked or abnormal aggression/biting.

• Abnormal behaviour – restlessness, lack of coordination, paralysis.

• Abnormal barking/growling.

• Hypersalivation, foaming at the mouth.

How can I prevent my pet from getting rabies?

• All puppies and kittens should be vaccinated against rabies from three months of age and a booster before one year.

• Thereafter a booster rabies vaccination every three years.To make appointment residents may contact the SPCA on 011 894 2814.
