Putfontein crime spree sparks manhunt

Police are calling on members of the community who might have witnessed or have insight information to come forward.

The Putfontein police have launched a manhunt for three men who they believe are linked to a recent crime spree involving a murder, attempted murder and business robbery.

According to Putfontein SAPS spokesperson Sgt Raider Ubisi, on August 13 a businessman, believed to be in his early 40s, was shot dead after three men entered his business in Mayfield Extension 11 at around 19:00.

He was shot several times in the upper body and declared dead by paramedics.

“According to information received, soon after the gunshots, three men were seen leaving the premises. Two of them had firearms. It is unclear if anything was stolen from the business.”

A case of murder was open at the station.

On August 17, a man believed to be in his late 40s was shot and robbed in Mayfield Ext One at around 03:00.

Ubisi said the man was sleeping when he heard the door to his house being broken down.

“He went to the door and tried to fight the intruders off but was shot in the upper body through a window by one of the intruders,” said Ubisi.

“When the three armed men entered the room, they shot him again in the leg and robbed him of an undisclosed amount of cash and two cellphones.”

The man was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

About 30 minutes later (03:30), two men were shot during a business robbery in Mayfield Ext Six.

Ubisi explained that three robbers broke into the tuck shop and shot the two victims while they were sleeping.

“A woman at a nearby house, who was looking out of a window at the time to see what was going on, was also shot in the upper body by the robbers,” he said.

The robbers fled with an undisclosed amount of cash from the tuck shop.

All the victims were transported to a local hospital.

Cases of house robbery, business robbery and attempted murder were opened at the station.

The police are calling on members of the community who may have witnessed any of these incidents or who have information to come forward.

He reiterated the identity of anyone coming forward will be kept confidential and tips can be given to the police anonymously – either through Crime Stop (08600 10111), by phoning the station on 011 845 6315 or using the MYSAPS app.

Putfontein SAPS station commander Lt-Col Wellington Mathiane described the incidents as inhumane and urged the public to assist the police to apprehend these criminals.
