No funds to keep Purple Red Paws open

After almost five years of rescuing and rehoming animals that have been abused and neglected, Purple Red Paws had to recently close their doors due to a lack of finances.

The organisation based in Zesfontein has stopped taking in animals and is now focusing on finding loving homes for the 52 dogs and 53 cats they have on their premises.

Zalitha Laas, the co-founder of Purple Red Paws, said they started the organisation because they loved animals and were never able to turn away any animal in need.

“Before Covid-19, Marisa Meano worked full-time and could cover the cost for the animals’ needs, but now that she has been working from home, she only makes enough for us to survive.”

She added they had fallen behind on their electricity bill as they used the money to buy food for the animals.

She fears their power will be cut and they will no longer be able to feed the animals or give them water as they have a borehole.

“We would go all out for animals in trouble and wake up at all hours to go and help; we even divided our yard to keep the animals they throw over our fence safe from our dogs when they are left there.

“It breaks our hearts knowing we are unable to do this anymore.”

An emotional Meano said she had always been drawn to dogs and would stay with her dog in the garage until her mother had to call her in and remind her she had school the next day.

As she walked through the kennels she shared a few experiences she had with the animals they had rescued through the years, from nursing an injured bait dog back to health after they had said he had a very small chance to live and raising a puppy that was abused and raped.

The duo described this as being one of the hardest decisions they had to make, not only for the animals but they would be forced to let go of their kennel hand, Patrick Katungar, who has been with them for a while.

While they are still faced with outstanding vet bills and the stress of where the next meal for the animals will come from, all they want is for all the animals to go to a safe and loving home.

They want to thank everyone who had donated and assisted the organisation.
