Bredell family hosts raffle to raise funds for medical expenses

A Bredell family has started a raffle competition and is encouraging residents to buy tickets, as the funds raised will go towards the care of their special needs son, Marius Ferreira.

Rochelle (Marius’s mother) said they had been struggling to conceive and were very happy to find out she was pregnant.

“He was born at 28 weeks and weighed 1.1kg.

“Two weeks after his birth, he contracted a fungal infection, which caused PVL (when brain tissue has been injured or died) brain bleeding and since then it’s been a tough road.”

The hospital has been a second home for the six-year-old who has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy and microcephaly.

Marius needs constant care as he has silent reflux and is required to be tube-fed. He is also epileptic and bound to a wheelchair.

“He needs to be seen by an occupational therapist and a speech therapist, but we don’t have that kind of money. His medical expenses are about R3 000 a month.

“I look after him as we cannot afford to send him to school at this point,” she said.

She added he needs to see his neurologist in December, which will cost R3 000.

“We also want to apply for a new wheelchair and do botox for his feet and mouth, but we have an R1 600 bill due for the doctor.”

The raffle not only allows residents to help but prizes are also up for grabs.

Each ticket costs R 120 and a few lucky tickets stand a chance to win the following:

• First prize is four nights for four people at San Lameer (out of season)

• Second is a biltong knife and R500 gift card for the ladies

• Third prize is a biltong hamper and hair products plus a few coasters

The draw will take place on August 6.

Residents may contact Rochelle on 083 607 2782 for information on how to purchase the tickets.
