#presidentspeaks: SAPS reports on unrest incidents in Benoni today

In Daveyton, about 10 people were arrested following looting at Daveyton Mall. 

Two men, aged 18 and 25, were arrested after three Pakistani grocery stores were looted, allegedly by hostel dwellers, this morning (July 12), in Actonville.

Actonville SAPS spokesperson Sgt Godin Nyathi said during the incident a 22-year-old man was found dead at the hostel with a bullet wound to the upper body.

“Police are investigating to establish the motive and possibly affect an arrest for the perpetrator/s,” said Nyathi.

In Daveyton, about 10 people were arrested following looting at Daveyton Mall. The mall was closed after several stores were looted and vandalised.

The Daveyton SAPS spokesperson was unavailable for comment.

In Crystal Park, two men were arrested following two stores being looted at the Cloverdene Shopping Centre.

The shopping has been closed for the safety of the staff and customers. Crystal Park SAPS spokesperson Sgt Lerato Mopeli said the situation was calmer when she spoke to the City Times at around 14.30 today.

Putfontein SAPS spokesperson Sgt Raider Ubisi said the protestors attempted to loot Mayfield Square but law enforcers were on site however a Pakistani shop opposite the mall was looted.

The protestors also burnt tyres on the N12 towards the Putfontein off-ramp earlier.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said the police managed to dispatch the crowd and motorists can use the road.

The looting and violence started in KwaZulu-Natal and quickly spread to areas of Gauteng, allegedly by followers of former president Jacob Zuma, who are using acts of domestic terrorism to demand that he must be freed from prison.

SANDF soldiers have been deployed to Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal to assist law enforcement agencies amid violent protests.
