Brickmakers get a skills boost in Mayfield

This forms part of PPC’s efforts to provide the education required to address the shortage of skills in the construction sector.

The Cashbuild Khula Nathi Workshop was hosted on June 11 in Mayfield to extend its efforts in providing the technical expertise required to broaden the opportunities for brick and block maker entrepreneurs.

The workshop, held at the Cashbuild in Mayfield Square, in partnership with PPC, form part of PPC’s efforts to provide the education required to address the shortage of skills in the construction sector while strengthening the local economy.

Specialist strategic accounts at PPC Warren Goliath said PPC is a proudly South African company and believes that this should be evident throughout their value chain.

“While we continue to source 100% of our raw materials, including clinker, in the manufacturer and distribution of our cement and materials, we remain invested in the education and economic empowerment of the brick and block makers across the country,” he said.

“Offering training for relevant skills and experiences in the construction sector is one of the keys to addressing the industry’s skills shortage and high youth unemployment rate in the country. The commitment to local procurement grows the economy, creates jobs, broadens markets and creates numerous opportunities for business expansion.”

CSI manager for Cashbuild Thembelani Tukwayo explained that their biggest mission is to invest in communities where they trade.

“The investment must be something that uplifts the community and not the brand. Our philosophy is that if it benefits the community it also benefits us as a company,” said Tukwayo.

Tukwayo said they can’t help every brick maker in Daveyton in terms of upskilling them but these workshops are for information sharing.

Oupa Thetelesta from Lefika Nttswe shared how to build a successful business with the attendees during the Cashbuild Khula Nathi Workshop in Mayfield.

The local brick makers also got an opportunity to engage with Oupa Thetelesta from Lefika Nttswe who share how one can build a successful brick and block making business.
