Foundation donates 500 food parcels to the residents of Chief Albert Luthuli

In South Africa, there is a need for food security and Covid-19 has hit everyone hard.

The Baitul Islam Foundation and its partners donated 500 food parcels to the youth and the elderly community members of Chief A Luthuli Park and the N12 informal settlement on May 30.

The son of the former president, Jacob Zuma, Duduzane, handed out the food parcels to the residents.

Sulaiman Shai, the chairperson of the Baitul Islam Foundation and organiser, said Duduzane was present at the handover as a friend and because they share the same historical background.

“He is also a person who is highly active in youth matters and looking at June 16 where we will be commemorating Youth Day, we saw it fit to invite him to hand over the food parcel with us as a special gesture and remembrance of this remarkable youth month,” said Shai.

Shai explained that in South Africa, there is a need for food security and Covid-19 has hit everyone hard.

“We can’t always rely on the government for assistance. Last year June, we distributed about 300 hampers to this community and we decided to make it a yearly event for the benefit of the community; hence, we increased the number to 500 hampers this year.

“In the month of Ramadan, we distributed 250 hampers to the needy. So far this year, we have distributed 750 hampers to 750 families, and we are very happy that we made a small difference to the community,” he said.
