Putfontein police warn against hitchhiking following rape incidents

The man operates around 7am and 8am and it is not clear what model the vehicle is.

The Putfontein police are urging residents, especially females to avoid hitchhiking following recent rape incidents reported at the station.

Putfontein SAPS spokesperson Sgt Raider Ubisi said there is an unknown vehicle that has been targeting women and children who are going to work and school.

“In most incidents reported, the unknown man allegedly offers you a lift or asks for directions and once you are inside the vehicle, he takes out a firearm and threatens to kill you if you don’t follow his instructions,” said Ubisi.

“He then stops the vehicle at a nearby veld, rapes the women and drops them off at a location that is far from where he picked them up from.”

The man operates around 7am and 8am and it is not clear what model the vehicle is.

Ubisi said they encourage women not to accept lifts from strangers and always ask where the car is headed first rather than offering up a destination.
