Sibikwa recreates Soweto Uprising for learners

Director of Sibikwa Smal Ndaba said they wanted the learners to get involved to give them a chance to experience history.

Sibikwa Arts Centre, in Wattville, hosted a Memories of June 16 production for Grade Seven to 12 learners, which started on May 17 and will run until May 28.

The centre involved the learners by allowing them to take part in the practical demonstration of the June 16 Soweto Uprising.

Learners were given a detailed description of what happened in 1976, while sections of the centre were allocated to the different highlights of the Soweto uprising and the students played the role of the children who went on strike that day.

Director of Sibikwa Smal Ndaba said they wanted the learners to get involved to give them a chance to experience history.

“We wanted them to remember the sacrifices made by those learners all those years ago and felt that by them seeing it happen or reliving the experience it will give them a better understanding.”

After the experience, learners were asked how they felt and many answered that getting into character and reenacting the experience had given them a better understanding of the events of June 16, 1976.
