Armed robbery suspect expected to reappear in court in June

The suspect is expected to make his next appearance on June 18.

A man who was arrested in March for the armed robbery of a cellphone from a 13-year-old is expected to reappear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on June 18.

“The suspect was arrested in Western Extension seven days after the incident and has been positively linked to more robbery cases involving learners,” said Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele in a previous article.

“A case of robbery was opened at Benoni Police Station after the teen was held at gunpoint and robbed of his phone by the driver of a silver VW Polo while walking home from school at about 3pm on March 22.

“When police searched the vehicle, a firearm was found hidden inside the air filter of the engine. The suspect was immediately arrested and detained at Benoni SAPS.

“On April 6, an identification parade was held, where other victims pointed out the suspect, linking him to five more armed robberies that began in November and continued into March.”

Since his arrest, the man-made appearances on March 31, April 15, April 20 and May 18.

His case was remanded to June for further investigations.

“Investigations revealed the suspect was targeting learners between the ages of 13 and 18,” Sekele explained.
