No idle hands at this knitting group

The group call themselves the Happy Hookers and revel in the venerable art of crocheting.

Twelve women always look forward to getting together on a Tuesday morning to knit for a good cause.

The group call themselves the Happy Hookers and revel in the venerable art of crocheting.

One of the members, Kathryn Roberts, said some of the women started knitting 30 years ago for the Hospice East Rand annual fete.

In 2018, the group started getting together at Kathryn’s house to knit for different NPOs in the community.

“We love knitting. It is good fellowship time. Some of the knitters live in retirement villages, and it can get lonely at home,” said Kathryn.

“We enjoy using our hands and were taught that idle hands are the devil’s tools.”

The intrepid crafters enjoy a cup of tea and cake over their craft.

Last year, their nimble fingers created 300 bennies, 350 masks, over 100 baby jerseys and blankets and about 40 bigger blankets for the Fairleads Retirement Village frail care facility.

They also make baby packs which consist of a blanket, a jersey, booties, a vest and socks.

Kathryn said they knit baby clothing ‘because babies are born every day’.

These packs are given to a social worker who distributes them at a clinic in Etwatwa.

They are knitting 20 blankets for the Daveyton Methodist Home’s frail care.

The group buys wool but always welcomes donations of wool. They invite other eager knitters to join them.

Some of the team members are Sheila Cleminshaw, Daphne Thompson, Lily Spruit, Lydia Botha, Lynn Engelbrecht, Jean Bevan, Carol Gordon, Mariam Thornton and Nicole Koll.

To join them or to donate wool contact Kathryn on 074 806 9606.
