Putfontein police warn of man who lures women with job offers

The reported incidents occurred during the day.

The Putfontein SAPS is again urging women to avoid walking alone, especially in open veld areas or meeting strangers who promised them jobs.

This comes after several rape and robbery cases were reported at the station in March.

On May 4, the man believed to be in his mid-30s, met a woman who was looking for a job in the Benoni area.

Putfontein SAPS spokesperson Sgt Raider Ubisi said the man allegedly told the woman he knows of someone who is looking for a domestic worker around the Lilyvale plots.

“They exchanged numbers and agreed to meet the following day near the plots,” said Ubisi.

“When they met the next day, the unknown man said they will walk to the household. As they were walking nearby a mielie veld, the man tried to rape the woman; however, she fought back and ran to the police station.”
The man took a cellphone from her and ran off.

A case of robbery was opened at the Putfontein Police Station.

Ubisi added that in other cases the victims were offered jobs. When they arrived at the meeting spot, a man threatened them with a knife and then raped and robbed them.

“We urge women to verify the job offers before meeting with strangers and always meet in public places such as a mall,” he said.

The reported incidents occurred during the day.

Police are investigating.
