Cracks in Snake Road being addressed

Gautrans is urgently conducting an investigation to determine the exact point where the stormwater system is leaking

A concerned resident sent in photos of cracks in part of Snake Road since its rehabilitation following a sinkhole which developed on November 2, 2019, and which was fully repaired by September.

The concerned resident deemed the current state of the road “a disaster waiting to happen” and urged authorities to take this up as a matter of urgency.

Following a media enquiry, the metro said Snake Road is a provincial road which falls under the jurisdiction of the provincial government.

“Where the road is sinking, a pipe jacking (about 1.2m diameter pipe laid) was done by Rand Water a few months ago. Rand Water and Gautrans are investigating to identify the cause and were on site on April 28,” media spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said.

Rand Water confirmed they and Gautrans officials held a meeting on April 28 to discuss sagging of parts of Snake Road, where Rand Water is working on its S4 pipeline.

“Our preliminary investigations discovered the sagging was due to a stormwater drainage system that was leaking, resulting in gravel road layers being washed away,” Rand Water media spokesperson Justice Mohale said.

“The officials from the two organisations agreed that Gautrans would urgently conduct an investigation to determine the exact point where the stormwater was leaking.

“It was also agreed that Gautrans would convene another meeting to discuss the outcomes of its investigation and the rehabilitation of the road.”
