The South African Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre recently rescued an injured immature fish eagle in the Benoni small farms area.

Vanessa Davis from the organisation said they found the bird grounded and it appeared to have hit powerlines.

The bird was immediately taken to the Terrace Road Veterinary Hospital in Edenvale and attended to by Dr Shabeer Bhoola.

He put the bird under sedation to assess the extent of the injuries with an X-ray and scheduled surgery for the next morning, which went well.

“We’ve decided to name the bird Breeze, as she is a pleasure to work with. However, our challenge is keeping up with her huge appetite,” Davis said.

The organisation is appealing to all avid fishermen who are willing to drop off fresh-caught fish for Breeze.

“Breeze is going to be with us for a few months, so we need as much food as we can get.

“We are grateful for the high level of expertise Dr Shabeer offers and we don’t know what we would do without the input and dedicated help of all the staff at Terrace Road Vet.”

Residents who would like to donate towards the upkeep of the fish eagle can contact Judy on 073 112 1131 for more information.
