Former Benonian crowned Mrs South Africa

Former Benonian Thenjiwe Mdluli was crowned Mrs South Africa 2021 at a prestigious event held at Emperors Palace on March 18.

The 31-year-old said when they announced the winner, she was shocked and amazed.

“I was overcome with joy and a deep sense of gratitude. I had already gained so much from the journey, crown or no crown; I was a winner because I had achieved the personal development I was striving for,” said Mdluli.

“Being announced as the queen gave me a renewed sense of purpose and responsibility. The journey was longer than anticipated due to the effects of Covid-19. The journey was demanding and I had to lean on my family support structure, especially when it came to helping with taking care of my children.”

She said any journey of growth comes with an emotional roller coaster.

“As I was evolving, I experienced many positive revelations but also moments of self-doubt. However, now I’m in a very good space and I know I will do very well in this new chapter of my life. My family was genuinely happy for me as they always had faith in me, and my husband enjoys his new role as ‘Mr South Africa’.”

The former Willowmoore High School learner said she plans to fight the scourge of non-communicable diseases, such as type two diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and mental health issues which are prevalent in low-income communities.

“I aim to do this by educating children in primary schools on how to form healthy lifestyle habits such as practising good nutrition, exercising, and being mindful of one’s mental and sexual health.

“I also hope to build vegetable gardens at these schools to teach the children and community members how to be self-sufficient and prioritise their nutrition,” said Mdluli.

The Edenvale resident extends her deepest gratitude and a big thank you to everyone who has supported her through this journey.

“The love and support I’ve been receiving have been so overwhelming. To all the young girls, I just want to remind you that you are perfect just as you are.

“Each of you possesses unique talents and skills the world needs. You are capable, never doubt the special purpose you were born to fulfil. Your dreams are valid, pursue them with everything you have.”
