BFS arrests three for possession of hijacked vehicle

The police thanked the community for their alertness and supplying the SAPS with the information, which led to the suspects' apprehension

The Benoni Flying Squad arrested three men for being in possession of a hijacked motor vehicle and possession of car-breaking equipment on March 26 in Northmead.

BFS spokesperson WO Grant Giblin said Sgt Jaco Powell and WO Khumalo received a call from the community about a black Kia that is involved in numerous thefts of motor vehicles around Benoni, Kempton Park and Edenvale.

“It was mentioned that the vehicle was driving around the Northmead area. When the alleged suspects noticed they were being followed by a security vehicle they started to speed off and back up was called,” said Giblin.

“The two officers together with several security companies joined the chase. The robbers were finally cornered close to a shopping centre in the area.”

Police searched the vehicle and found a 22 channel military signal jammer, 21 different car keys belonging to Fords and Toyotas, 10 vehicle computer boxes, 10 ignitions, eight pairs of gloves, five pairs of different registration plates, double-sided tapes and five sharpened tools used to break open vehicle locks.

Giblin said the vehicle was tested and it was found that it was reported hijacked from a dealership in Bedfordview in August 2020.

“Investigation continues into the suspects’ alleged involvement in numerous vehicle thefts around Ekurhuleni.

“We thank the community for their alertness and supplying the SAPS with the information, which led to the suspects’ apprehension,” he said.
