Actonville wellness workshop a success for 200% Foundation

The foundation has trained specialists and professionals to facilitate the healing and recovery of anyone who is vulnerable and in need after being exposed to trauma or stress.

The 200% Foundation held its first wellness workshop on March 13 and the day was a success. It hosted about 150 people at a park in Actonville.

The foundation has trained specialists and professionals to facilitate the healing and recovery of anyone who is vulnerable and in need after being exposed to trauma or stress.

The event, which took place at the park on the corners of Prieska and Kimberley streets, only catered for those above 18 years.

“People have been affected mentally and emotionally by the effects of Covid-19,” said Manogari Moonsammy from the 200% Foundation.

“The workshop was held to ‘kick-start’ their batteries.”

The outdoor event ensured that all Covid-19 protocols were adhered to.

The foundation’s communications manager, Nerissa Muthayan, said: “Temperatures were taken at the gate and hands were sanitised.

Masks were provided for those who did not have one because nobody was allowed into the workshop without one.

“We want to help to rebuild the community in a safe environment.”

The programme consisted of various activities, which included:

• Laugh therapy by Guiding Light

Roshni Pillay from Guiding Light explained the importance of laughter.

• Breathing and relaxation techniques by the Advait Sanctuary

Roshni Magan from Advait Sanctuary displays breathing and relaxation techniques.

• Self-defence techniques by On Point Protection Skills (OPPS).

Pieter Cornelius from OPPS talks about self-defence techniques.

Attendees sat under a marquee and facilitators from the above organisations rotated to provide the lessons.

The City Times reported in a previous article that Tai chi by the Tai Chi Chuan Dojo in Benoni would also host a class on the day, but the workshop for Tai chi was cancelled.

Chicken and vegetable biryani, as well as snacks and a snack pack, were also given to those who attended the event.

“This has started in Actonville, but we are looking at turning it into a roadshow,” Moonsammy said.

“Our next workshop will be in June – Covid-19 dependent and it will be a bereavement workshop, where we will talk to smaller groups of people.”

According to Muthayan, everyone who attended the event to assist, such as Nazaf Security, Guiding Light, Advait Sanctuary, OPPS, Super

Stars Soccer Academy, Bad Boyz Security and Afriforum did so voluntarily.
