Metro awards matric achievers

The Ekurhuleni metro hosted the 2021 GM Pitje Academic Excellence Awards on March 10 at the Germiston Civic Centre, with only the recipients of awards and key council officials in attendance.

Mayor Mzwandile Masina announced during the ceremony that 609 bursary recipients will be graduating in this term of office and the University of Science and Technology in Ekurhuleni is becoming a reality as President Cyril Ramaphosa has given the project the nod of approval.

The awards are held to honour the best-performing learners and the metro’s bursary scheme graduates.

Masina said the pandemic affected the performance of the Class of 2020 but many refused to let the year go to waste.

“We are proud of the learners’ resilience, the teachers’ dedication and the support from parents,” he said.

About 45 learners were rewarded for their 2020 matric performance.

The top six best-performing learners received the Executive Mayor’s GM Pitje honorary awards, which will entail a full bursary and laptop prizes.

The top best-performing teachers in subject categories were honoured, as well as the graduates who are part of the metro’s bursary scheme, for the completion of their studies through the bursary scheme.

The GM Pitje Academic Excellence Awards Benoni results are:

• Top 10 best-performing high schools from priority school areas: Unity Secondary School (second place) and Lesiba Secondary School (fourth place). .

• Top 10 best-performing high schools: Benoni High School, fourth place.

• Most improved schools: Gekombineerde Skool Noordelig, fouth place.

• Best-performing teachers in mathematics: Tessa Swart, Seshendran Naidoo and Christina di Bartolomeo (Benoni High School).

• Best-performing teachers in life sciences: Nicola Merrrick and Alison Knoop (Benoni High School).

• Best-performing learner in business studies and accounting: Sifiso Ntikane (Etwatwa Secondary School).

• Best-performing learners from priority school areas: Sifiso Ntikane (Etwatwa Secondary School).

• Top 15 best-performing learners in Class of 2020: Layla Germishuys (first place, Hoërskool Brandwag), Ruan Roodt (second place, Hoërskool Brandwag),Sifiso Ntikane (third place, Etwatwa Secondary School), Maliha Carrim (seventh place,Benoni Muslim School) and Jacques Pieterse (13th place, Hoërskool Brandwag).

During the proceedings, Masina congratulated Unity Secondary for being named the second best-performing township school in the province, with a pass rate of 90.8 per cent.

“The school is a demonstration of the commitment of teachers and the dedication of learners.”
