Benoni High learner to study medicine

Rulani said the Class of 2020 went through tough times as things were constantly changing.

To carry the title of Dr in the future is what kept Rulani Mhlongo motivated.

Hard work paid off as she passed her matric with eight distinctions.

The former Benoni High School learner is at the University of Pretoria, studying medicine.

“I am really happy about my decision and I am ready to work hard. I am one step closer to reaching my dreams; however, I am still on the search for a bursary.”

Rulani said the Class of 2020 went through tough times as things were constantly changing.

“I was angry most of the time because I did not agree with some of the decisions that were made on our behalf.

However, to say that I have eight distinctions feels surreal.

“We had no one to ask advice from because no previous matric group had gone through what we went through.

“Even though more academic resources were made available to us, I can say a lot of us matriculants felt like giving up.”

She highlighted that her family became her biggest support structure as they lent her an ear when she needed one and gave her space, which she appreciated.

“My teachers were superstars, even though the pandemic asked a lot from them. I would like to thank them for fighting for us every day and pushing us to work when we didn’t want to.”

Her advice for the matriculants of 2021 is to play but grind harder.

“Spend time with your friends now, but when finals come you need to put your academics first.

“You are capable of so many things.

Always be on top of your work, being behind is not nice,” she concluded.
