Foundation hosts recent blood drive in aid of SANBS

The number of donors has been reducing since the pandemic broke out, according to the 100% Foundation.

The 100% Foundation hosted a blood drive in Rynfield on February 19 at Affinity Health to assist the Northmead SANBS with more blood donations.

Blood donation is a major concern to society at the moment due to the lack thereof.

“Donated blood is lifesaving for individuals who need it, blood is scarce and there is a shortage of active blood donors that meet the need of the increased blood demand,” said Siphiwe Mahlangu, development and project coordinator.

Every two seconds, someone needs blood, but supplies are low, especially due to Covid-19.

The number of donors has been reducing since the pandemic broke out, according to the 100% Foundation.

“SANBS would like to assure donors that donating blood is still safe,” said Terrence Pillay, spokesperson for SANBS.

“The coronavirus cannot be transmitted through a blood transfusion, as respiratory viruses are generally not known to be transmittable by donation or transfusion.”

The 100% Foundation solely rely on the support of Affinity Health staff members to make the blood donation drive successful and meaningful.

“We are not allowed to bring in outside donors, as it may be disruptive to the operations of the business,” said Mahlangu.

“Although the numbers were not what we normally have, we are more than grateful to all the donors that showed up and donated.”
