Daveyton’s Unity Secondary School rated top in Gauteng

The school obtained a pass rate of 90.8 per cent for 2020.

Uplifting the standard of the learners and unleashing their potential is what drives Unity Secondary School to be the best.

The Daveyton-based school was named the second best-performing township school in Gauteng on February 22.

The school obtained a pass rate of 90.8 per cent for 2020.

In 2018, they were also awarded the best-performing township school and best secondary school improvement programme (SSIP).

The school’s deputy principal, Buyile Zondo, said they were not expecting this award, especially because of the pandemic. However, they are excited about it.

“As a school, we always change our strategy whenever there are any challenges regarding the Grade 12 curriculum,” said Zondo.

“Even when the pandemic started, we had to strategise and not wait for the department to send us extra teachers because Grade 12 learners are very important.”

Zondo said they would juggle around teachers if they needed to. If a teacher was not well, they would substitute with another one while waiting for them to come back after a week or two.

“Also, working together as a team has been working for us as the school. We also act immediately when there is a challenge, we don’t wait for days trying to find a solution,” she said.

“We have already adjusted to the pandemic, the worst was last year. This year, we are looking at obtaining a 100 or 98 per cent pass rate because we have even started with our extra lessons.”

The deputy principal said the school thanks the parents for their support, especially the school governing body (SGB).

“We work well together as a team with the school management team, teachers and SGB. They would even go the extra mile of asking what the school needs so they could make it possible.

“Some of the parents and community even donated masks to ensure that everything ran smoothly; we didn’t have much to stress about.”

The former principal, Wandile James Makhubu, thanked the learners for their resilience, focus and discipline during the pandemic.

He also thanked the teachers for their selflessness and commitment to teaching, even on weekends.

“I thank the parents for cooperating with us and allowing us to manage their children in these difficult times and our SGB for assisting us financially to run our extra programmes successfully,” said Makhubu.
